White Desert of Egypt

Between Bahariya Oasis and Farafra Oasis is the White Desert of Egypt. One of the most beautiful and enchanting places on the planet. The Egyptian government has designated over 3000 square kilometers as a protected natural area. And with good reason. It is one of the most amazing landscapes in the world and is all the more precious and wonderful because very few people visit it.

The formation shown here on the left (Chuck for scale) shows the erosive power of the wind on the soft cretaceous chalk. Chalk is a variety of soft limestone. This chalk is very white and composed of nearly pure calcium carbonate - compacted micron-sized shells of plankton and algae (foraminifera). Scattered in the chalk were fossil shells of bivalves and sea biscuits (light colored) and other bivalves, corals or unidentified fossils of a shiny black mineral.

The desert sand, is a beautiful caramel color and very fine and soft to the touch. It is scattered with the footprints of foxes, beetles, small gazell and a mouse thing - maybe a gerbil or jerboa. There were amazingly few plants. A very tough looking succulent plant; but not much else.

My New Online Home

On the move again As yall know last year I started looking around for another way to host my work online. I was moving away from the lunacy and scam-ridden world of social media. It was hard, and I really enjoyed making little animations and images to share; but I know my content was becoming just more advertising on top of an overwhelming amount of ads that my followers were being inundated with. As I looked into it, I see that social media can have a detrimental effect on users' mental health and happiness. Creating unhappiness or stress is the exact opposite of why I create images. So I stepped back from that malstrom. And now I'm taking another step in a better direction. I'm moving away from prints and 3rd party reproduction to focus on real world interactions, and original creations. What's Going On? I can't say welcome back to you, because I'm the one who has been gone. I was gone for years focusing on my software UX/Design work for Lenovo. But in Jan this year, 2022 - holy cow 2022 - I retired from softwareland. I am now ready to indulge my less linear side. I know my engineering teammates are probably all rolling their eyes at since linear is probably not a word they would have associated with me. But, the design process is both linear and iterative, like the creation of art. Art is where my head and heart are now. Always my head has been full of ideas for sculptures, pictures, collages, things I could make. Ideas sprang up like popcorn. Always I was thinking, "I want to make that!" Always the answer was "no time." Now I have time, space and tons of materials I've collected over the years to turn into things that I've always wanted to see.
