2026!

Humans have known horses for - or at least lived closely with them for over 5 thousand years, an irreplaceable source of military power, transportation and sustenance. As much as I love horses, I have a hard time drawing and painting them. Like the Chinese zodiac meaning, to me horses are old gods. A well-conformed horse fits neatly into the Golden Section making them the most aesthetically pleasing animal. They are both movement and utter stillness. Dangerous yet prey animals. Their legs are so slender for such a large animal; made up of all bone and sinew. Their great arching necks mirrored by their rounded rumps. No wonder I struggle to capture them and the feelings they give me.  :-)

 Happy New Year!!

Lunar New Year starts on Feb 17th, but I'm getting my New Year's greetings in early. The fire horse symbolizes energy and freedom, independence and grace. The element fire intensives all those qualities making this a good time to make changes, transformations and breaking free from stagnation.

Yearly Wrap Up

Last year was giant. I exhibited paintings at The Mayton and sold some too! I participated in multiple markets and got to speak with tons of really nice, fun people - and sold some too! This year I'm shaking things up again. I'm focusing more on markets, local exhibits and face to face interactions. I like to see and speak with the people who are interested in my images.

Exhibits

The Mayton
301 South Academy St in Cary

I have a piece going in the new show opening at The Mayton next week, a still life of stylized flowers. This piece is going into the Flora & Fauna exhibit at The Mayton, . They love a very nice restaurant and bar, Peck and Plume. The stuff is super nice and always ready to help. They are always speedy to help us add or remove hangers from the halls. The Mayton hosts two exibits for The Fine Art League of Cary (aka FALC). The first is the 2nd and 3rd floor of the hotel. On the ground floor is an exhibition of FALC Masters. Usually people who have exhibited or won regional or national prizes for their work.

Wake Med Reflections Gallery

You can see my Sky Bound painting Chuck put a frame on it and it looks beautiful! I love this picture, the colors are intense, befitting a big wet cloud on a summer afternoon.

Bayleaf Market
11723 Six Forks Road, Raleigh

I also have pieces available for sale at Bayleaf Market. If you are in the area, stop in. Courtney specializes in local artists, craftspersons and food items. It is always a blast to go in there. Christmas things are on sale right now. I picked up a little ceramic fir tree that I can wait to put out last year.

What's Going On? I can't say welcome back to you, because I'm the one who has been gone. I was gone for years focusing on my software UX/Design work for Lenovo. But in Jan this year, 2022 - holy cow 2022 - I retired from softwareland. I am now ready to indulge my less linear side. I know my engineering teammates are probably all rolling their eyes at since linear is probably not a word they would have associated with me. But, the design process is both linear and iterative, like the creation of art. Art is where my head and heart are now. Always my head has been full of ideas for sculptures, pictures, collages, things I could make. Ideas sprang up like popcorn. Always I was thinking, "I want to make that!" Always the answer was "no time." Now I have time, space and tons of materials I've collected over the years to turn into things that I've always wanted to see. Now I need to build the skills I need to create the things I want to see.  I also ...

Miscellaneous

Pretty much anything can be an object for my painter's eye. Often I paint dreams or memories in addition to objects or scenes < Back to Additional Works >  Trees >  Landscapes >  Flowers >  Food > Animals Miscellaneous Olivetti Hula Popper & Others My sisters and I were giant fans of the TV show, The Carolina Sportsman (later The Southern Sportsman) sponsored by Arbogast lures. Fishing lures are pretty wonderful little objects, and really fun to paint.  Hula Wiggler & Others Arbogast Original & Others Swimmers

Trees

Trees are one of my favorite painting subjects, I try to capture them in all kinds of lighting situations. < Back to Additional Works >  Landscapes >  Flowers >  Food >  Miscellaneous >  Animals Winter Branches Sycamore Beech with Carolina Parakeets I'm a giant fan of our now-extinct native parrot, the Carolina Parakeet. Sadly the last died just about 100 years ago. If they had been able to hang on just a bit longer, we could have saved them. Pines Lichen on Branches Snowy Cedars
